EU AI Act overview: scope, risk tiers, and timeline through 2027
The EU AI Act is Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, the world's first horizontal legal framework for artificial intelligence. It entered into force on 1 August 2024 and applies on a staggered timeline through 2027, with most high-risk system obligations becoming enforceable on 2 August 2026 [1]. The Act covers any AI system placed on the EU market or used in the EU, regardless of where the provider is established, and sorts systems into four risk tiers with proportionate obligations and penalties up to 35 million euros or 7 percent of worldwide annual turnover.
