01.What is this capability?

Decision support is the category of AI systems that recommend rather than decide. The output is a score, a ranking, or a structured recommendation with a reasoning trace; the final action is taken by a human or by a deterministic rule the human has agreed to. The category covers underwriting recommendations, claims triage and reserving, loan eligibility scoring, fraud screening, supplier-risk ranking, and triage in healthcare and legal back offices.

The regulatory framing is unavoidable in 2026. EU AI Act Annex III classifies many decision systems as high-risk; GDPR Article 22 grants data subjects the right not to be subject to fully automated consequential decisions. We build to those constraints by default. The output is always a recommendation, never a final ruling.

The four-stage workflow we ship to production.

Four components. First, a feature layer that ingests structured signals from your systems of record (CRM, claims platform, core banking, EHR) and unstructured evidence from documents (extracted via the document-extraction capability). Second, a scoring layer that combines deterministic rules with a foundation model layer fine-tuned to your domain, returning a score, a recommended action, and a structured reasoning trace.

Third, an oversight interface where a human reviewer sees the recommendation, the evidence that produced it, the counter-factual evidence the system rejected, and a one-click approve, modify, or reject action. Fourth, an audit and feedback layer that writes every recommendation, every override, and every outcome back to immutable storage and into the evaluation set, so drift can be detected and the system can be re-tuned without retraining the underlying model.

Outcomes vary heavily with baseline. Where the historical workflow is humans reading dense files at the rate of one per 30 to 90 minutes, AI-assisted decision support routinely cuts review time by half or more while improving consistency between reviewers. False-positive rates on screening and triage tasks typically drop versus rule-only baselines, while false-negative rates depend on threshold tuning and need to be agreed up-front during scoping. McKinsey's 2024 State of AI reports that finance and insurance functions show the widest range of outcomes - the gap between best and worst performers is wide, and the difference is governance discipline.

Frequently asked questions

Is this fully automated decision-making?

No. We deliberately build decision support, not decision automation. The system recommends, a human approves, modifies, or rejects. This is the GDPR Article 22 and EU AI Act Annex III posture by default, and it is also the only architecture we have ever seen survive a regulator audit cleanly.

How is bias controlled?

Three layers. Evaluation suites that explicitly score against protected-attribute slices (age, gender, nationality, postcode-as-proxy where data permits). Shadow-mode rollout where fairness metrics must clear thresholds before any reviewer sees the recommendation. Quarterly drift reports including fairness re-tests, with re-tuning required when a slice drifts beyond agreed thresholds.

What if the system is wrong?

Every recommendation carries a confidence score and a reasoning trace. The reviewer can override in one click; the override writes back to the evaluation set automatically. The audit log records the recommendation, the override, the reviewer's reason, and the eventual outcome - this is the dataset that makes the system measurably better quarter on quarter.

How does this fit EU AI Act requirements?

Decision systems affecting access to insurance, credit, employment, education, or essential services are typically high-risk under Annex III. We deliver Article 13 transparency information, Article 14 human oversight provisions, Article 15 accuracy and robustness specifications, and the full Annex IV technical documentation set. Conformity-assessment scaffolding is part of the build, not a retrofit.

Can the model be replaced over time?

Yes - and we recommend treating the model layer as replaceable from day one. The evaluation harness, audit log, and oversight interface are model-agnostic. When a stronger or more cost-effective foundation model becomes available, you re-run the eval suite, compare on your real data, and promote if it clears your thresholds.

What kind of data do you need to build this?

Historical decisions with outcomes, where possible. The minimum is 90 days of decision-and-outcome pairs; 12 months is preferable for fairness analysis. For workflows without that history (genuinely novel risk classes), we deliver a rules-only scaffolding first, then layer the model in once enough data has accumulated.

How long does deployment take?

A first pilot covering one decision type reaches shadow-mode in 4 to 6 weeks. Full production lands in 12 to 16 weeks; the long pole is regulatory documentation and fairness validation, not engineering.
